BCHBC Chapter Profile: Powell River

The Powell River Chapter of BCHBC may be one of the smallest in the province, but this end-of-the-road, rural community has miles upon miles of riding trails. Located at the northern tip of the Sechelt Peninsula, Powell River is a town of 17,000 with neighbouring Texada Island a short ferry ride away. Separated from the city of Vancouver by two ferries and from Vancouver Island by one ferry, travelling to and from equestrian events is expensive and time consuming. Perhaps this is why the club has such a good working relationship with other user groups.  “We have to share, there’s nowhere else to go!” The Powell River BCHBC chapter formed in the mid 1990’s when Bob and Sharon Sunquist moved to Powell River from Kamloops and introduced BCHBC to the local horse community. Rendezvous News Update

Registration:April 30 is the last day you can get the early bird discount when you register for your Rendezvous tickets. Don't forget; once registered, to print off your tickets and note your Order number. This will allow you to register for our special clinics available to Rendezvous participants only. It is important at this time, if you wish to be camping with your Chapter or someone special, to send a message to Lisa Galanov informing her of your desires. Your RV organizers will try very hard to accommodate you but you must let us know NOW! Free Clinics:We have 4 special Clinicians attending Rendezvous. On March 29th ,2015, the Shuswap Chapter hosted an Equine Hoof Education and Boot Fitting Clinic with Dana Johnsen of Nickers Saddlery. The clinic was geared towards either reducing shoeing, or going barefoot. Dana explained the different characterizes of hooves, and how nutrition and exercise play key roles in the overall well-being of our horses. Our day was jam packed as we went through the following: Learning to "read" a hoof, assess form Recognizing elements of a healthy foot Hoof nutrition's role for foot function Demonstration of Trimming Methods and easy maintenance for boot fit Custom boot fitting demonstrations Dealing with different foot types and needs We had seven horses for boot fitting and a variety of breeds present such as the Quarter horse, Morgan, Arabian and Peruvian.
