BCHBC Chapter Profile: Merritt

Merritt hvtrail

Merritt Chapter was formed in August 2014 by Kelly Allen, Ron Stolp and a few enthusiastic horse people from the region. Both Ron and Kelly had been members of Back Country Horsemen BC since 2003, but once they retired and moved to Merritt, with all the horse people they met in the Merritt area, it was a given to start a chapter here.

The Nicole Valley and Merritt area has prefect riding weather with a drier climate than the coast. You can ride almost all year under beautiful blue skies. There are many horse camps in the area. You have Rainbow trails near Coldwater, where there is primitive camping with your horses, and going out of Merritt towards Kelowna you have the newly improved Lundbom Lake thanks to BCHBC members getting together for wonderful improvement project taking out the 12 old broken down corrals and replacing them for 28 beautiful pipe corrals.

Just up the way from Lundbom Lake, off the Highway going towards Kelowna, you have Kane Valley cross country trails you can camp at Harmon Lake no corrals but you can high line or bring you own corrals. Also up in the same area is also the 7 1/2 mile ranch in the Aspen Grove. Heading the other way through Merritt up towards Logan Lake you have the new horse camp “Hidden Valley Rustic Horse camp” over looking Mamit Lake on Hwy 97C. If you drive farther along 97C towards Logan Lake you can head right up to Leighton Lake were there are also corrals for camping with your horses. So you have lots of horse camping options in Merritt.

As far as riding, it is endless here in the Nicole Valley Merritt area, day rides can included Lundbom Lake, Rainbow trails, Cross country trails on both ends of the valley at Kane Valley and in Logan Lake at their Cross country ski trails. Also there is Stake Lake in between Logan Lake and Kamloops that also has some fabulous cross country ski trails. Hidden Valley Rustic Horse camp also offers use of their area for day rides. There is so much crown-land surrounding this beautiful valley it would be impossible to list all the areas to ride. As a new chapter we will like to get out and clear and gps some of these areas for all you riders.
