BCHBC Chapter Profile: Pemberton Valley

The Pemberton Valley Chapter of Back Country Horsemen started as a result of the Friendship Bridge that is going to be built between Mt. Currie and Pemberton.

There was an article in the local paper that said horses may or may not be allowed on the new bridge, because of costs! So Brenda Williams (the Treasurer for the Pemberton Chapter) wrote a letter to the local paper addressing the problem.  The response she was given by the Mayor of Pemberton was that the horses would be included. In wanting to have a voice for recreational horse users, four horse people went to the GM for the PVTA (Pemberton Valley Trails Association) and were nominated to sit on the Board alongside other recreation users such as bikers, hikers and walkers. Creating a platform for the voice of horseback riders to be heard, and to get some horse friendly trails back in the community.

They started by focusing on a trail by the Village of Pemberton called the Tour de Soo. A trail used by bikers, hikers and walkers. They were given the 'ok' for it to become a horse friendly trail once more, and create a loop to ride to the top for a nice two hour ride. Work will begin in this next month. Then they were given the 'ok' to seek out a new trail on Signal Hill (Bob’s Loop) and designate it as a horse/hiker trail only!

The two women behind starting up the Pemberton Chapter, Corinne Stoltz-Orava and Brenda Williams, had heard of Back Country Horseman before, but recognized that there hadn't been a need for the Chapter until now. Corinne and Brenda were the main instigators in starting the Chapter. along with Barb Eslake and Karen Love, on the board of the PVTA as well.

The Pemberton Chapter meetings are the first Thursday of every month.
